"First class - the best free astrophysical simulator"

Far better than other alternatives I've tried, first because of the precision of the data used, second because of the ease of navigation in time and in space.

And the graphics are stunning.

It's very useful to an amateur to work out astronomical dates to watch: say planetary conjunctions from a specific location, or eclipses, and so on.

It's easy to leave earth and explore any other known astronomical object in Celestia's databases, or the extensive add-ons.

Sci-fi fans can find a number of recreations of fictional star systems that re optional add-ons - Star Wars, obviously, is there.

Pros
  • Easy to use predictive tool for earth-bound observation.
  • Easy to use navigation in time and space for available data which includes millions of stars and a number of other astrophysical objects.
  • As a result: Wide set of add-ons - both real and fictional: From real spacecraft, to alternate planet geometries and textures, and to fictional objects of any type.
  • Free movement from planetary surface to supra-luminal speed gives the impression of flying through the universe.
Cons
  • Missing objects such as black holes etc.
  • Very processor-intensive unless, for example, nebulae are turned off, and the only the default star.dat set is enabled.
  • User space-craft controls while adequate are difficult to use smoothly: Roll and yaw only - No left - right in-plane rotation while in flight for example.
  • Minor point: Adding features and keeping track is simple but requires discipline (keeping separate clearly marked folders) in order to keep track of modifications.
