Real-time space exploration on your computer

Unless you are a millionaire or an astronaut, space travel is probably out of reach. Bring it a little closer to home with Celestia.

Celestia is a real-time, 3D space simulator that lets you fly around galaxies, checking out all the fascinating things they contain - from planets and stars to asteroids and space stations. It may only be a simulation, but, unless you win the lottery, it is probably the closest you're going to get to the real thing.

For free software, Celestia is extremely complete. It has a wealth of demos, online and offline user guides, a wiki, a forum and even a Wikipedia entry! It is just as well that all this help is available, however, because it is not a particularly easy program to use. In theory, you navigate around the universe by using the mouse or the keyboard. Right-clicking on an object (such as a planet) will bring up various options, while in the tool bar you can perform more complex tasks, such as searching for Bayer designations, taking videos, tracking objects and configuring options. Although all that sounds pretty normal, it is not as easy as it seems.

I found the controls to be jerky and non-intuitive, and despite spending a fair amount of time playing around with it, didn't manage to get it working as well as I suspect it can. Briefly reading the manuals didn't help either, and I think that to get the most out of Celestia, you would have to put some serious research in.

Astronomy fans and those with a burning interest in our galaxy will surely make the effort that is needed to really get the most out of Celestia. The program definitely encourages serious dedication and obviously has been created by a person - Chris Laurel - who loves what he does. Celestia is meticulously researched and put together, and there is a multitude of extra resources on the website.

Celestia: a beautiful and fascinating program for those willing to make the effort.

User reviews about Celestia

by TheLostProbe

celestia is undoubtedly the single best free space simulator ever created. the very fact that it follows the free and open-source initiative is one of the reasons it has been so successful. not to mention its highly modifiable, with a thriving community of users that create high-quality add-ons that enhance the experience many many times compared to stock celestia, which i think we can all agree is a bit crap, except stock 1.7.0 which is beautiful and packed with content. additionally, celestia runs on quite literally every operating system, whether it be your favourite linux distro, plain old windows and macOS, the little-known BSD operating system family, the just as obscure amigaOS family, and even android and iOS! no matter what computer or phone you have, no matter how bad or good the processors perform, you wont be missing out on this wonderful program and its communityi would not recommend downloading it from softonic since they use an outdated version of celestia, and also havent updated the project's main site to the new URL. better to go to celestia.space and download the latest 1.6.2.2 version from there. alternatively, you could give the much much much better 1.7.0 beta version a try, it has better graphics and content updates, more bugfixes, and also a new Qt UI that will definitely work much better than the old win32 and GTK UIs that the person who wrote the softonic review was having troubles with: windows (READ THE AUTHOR'S POSTS CAREFULLY), macos, linux, android and iOS versions run 1.7.0 by default (screenshots on the play store and app store are outdated as of time of writing, the actual content in the program looks much better. they should be getting updated shortly, though)

One of the best and its free!!!!!!!. This has got to be one of the very best astronomy programmes every not only does it do what it says it does but its easy to understand and to operate but it is very educational to even the most first time user in the way everything is explained.Unlike many programmes it stays with you even while you make a few mistakes and puts you righ.I use this along with my telescope and it really helps you to get into the astro photography part of astronomy giving some stunning pictures as you go along. well donea programme worth having even if you are not into astronomy and just want to knoe what something is,!!!!!

Good but not great.. it would of been a good piece of software a few year's back but in this day and age, not so good. If i was you i would look elsewhere. (e.g. stellarium.) is a great piece of software. I would recommend it far more than this Pros: Looks very nice Cons: controls are horrible

In Softonic we scan all the files hosted on our platform to assess and avoid any potential harm for your device. Our team performs checks each time a new file is uploaded and periodically reviews files to confirm or update their status. This comprehensive process allows us to set a status for any downloadable file as follows:

Clean

It’s extremely likely that this software program is clean.

What does this mean?

We have scanned the file and URLs associated with this software program in more than 50 of the world's leading antivirus services; no possible threat has been detected.

Warning

This software program is potentially malicious or may contain unwanted bundled software.

Why is the software program still available?

Based on our scan system, we have determined that these flags are possibly false positives.

What is a false positive?

It means a benign program is wrongfully flagged as malicious due to an overly broad detection signature or algorithm used in an antivirus program.

We’d like to highlight that from time to time, we may miss a potentially malicious software program. To continue promising you a malware-free catalog of programs and apps, our team has integrated a Report Software feature in every catalog page that loops your feedback back to us.

Flag any particular issues you may encounter and Softonic will address those concerns as soon as possible.
